The Custard Factory’s flagship building and one of the finest Victorian terracotta-fronted buildings in the country, Devonshire House was designed by Augustus Macer-Wright of Hamblins Architects and completed in 1902. The building stands on the spot, first settled by the Berma tribe in the 8th Century, which became the city of Birmingham.

Devonshire House is to be reconstructed around three internal courtyards. Entering through a spectacular tunnel, the first courtyard will contain a sculptural installation of huge human figures crashing into the sub-earth, watched by an amazed child. The second courtyard will be criss-crossed with a matrix of slender stainless steel tubes; tunnelled through these will be bridges of glass, each of the transparent planks playing a musical note. The third courtyard in this remarkable building is empty, reserved for the most important aspect of the Custard Factory: the community.
