This week is a busy one at the Custard Factory; here is a round up of highlights.

Hello Culture 2011

This Thursday (17th November) we have the Hello Culture conference at Zellig. As part of Digital Week, this conference will explore how the cultural and creative sector can exploit digital technology. There are some great speakers lined up and it is a brilliant networking opportunity, so get your tickets before they sell out!

Fine art exhibition – Saranjit Birdi, Penny Mason and Wendy Smith

At the moment we have a fine art exhibition running at Zellig on the lower ground floor. The artists are Saranjit Birdi, Penny Mason and Wendy Smith; I’ve just been down there and the work is brilliant.

Saranjit presents fascinating life drawings and video documentation from drawing sessions held at the Friends Insitute in Moseley. He draws with not only his left and right hand, but his left and right feet and elbows!

Wendy’s work comprises of video and sculpture and explores our relationship with common objects. Some pieces are very striking and well worth a look. Finally, Penny Mason’s colourful paintings explore natural landscape placed in an abstract context.

The exhibition, which attracted around 150 people on its opening night, is running until this Sunday (20th November) so make sure you take a look. For more info, here is the flyer.

At the IKON

This week Stephen Earl Rogers, 7 Inch Cinema and Capsule are all holding exhibitions/events at the IKON Gallery in Brindley Place.

Between the 17th-20th November Stephen Earl Rogers will be showcasing a series of his paintings called ‘What To Do In An Emergency’. Based on a 1980s Reader’s Digest family manual, it is truly fascinating work.

On the 17th November (this Thursday) 7 Inch Cinema are hosting an evening of short films and music all associated with the 17th November throughout history. It is £3 on the door, but free if it is your birthday.

On the 20th November Capsule are presenting Andrew Moscardo-Parker and Ore in an evening of sound performance which centres on Birmingham’s musical heritage. Tickets are £6 online and on the door.

Urban Village pop up shop

Finally, this Saturday sees Urban Village holding their very own pop up shop around the corner from their store. They have some gorgeous items for great prices, so make sure you take a look! It is taking place on Saturday 19th November between 10:30am-5:30pm, right by the Urban Village store.
